Sandwich, Illinois 1973. I remember sitting in my pup tent under an apricot tree in my moms back yard with Joe Vogt, when a colorful kid named James Kaminky showed up with this news paper article(from the Chicago tribune) about 3 guys who rode horses from Arizona to Canada dressed as Mountain men.
I think for all 3 of us at age 15, it was pretty cool. I cut out the news clipping and still have it to this day….I recently found some pictures from the trip these guys made. It must have been quite an adventure.
The flick “man in the wilderness” (Richard Harris) and “Jeremiah Johnson” had come out a year earlier and my brother Arthur gave me 2 books about Mountain men to read 1. The last of the mountain men about Silvan Hart in Idaho, and 2. Lord Grizzly by Frederick Manfred, about Hugh Glass. These things all combined to set me on a quest for knowledge about wilderness living and survival that has never waned.
I have included a 2013 Arizona Republic interview with the trio on the 40th anniversary of their ride – http://archive.azcentral.com/thingstodo/living/articles/20130412arizona-canada-mountain-men-trek.html
