Gurkha Private Aung San Thuriya Suk Bahdur Rai - Burma

As some of you pimps might know, I have worked with and studied the Gurkhas for many years. I once commanded a security detachment of former Indian Army Gurkhas in Afghanistan. These cats always impressed me with their courage and dedication. I am also impressed by how much they can drink (Booze) and eat!.

Anyhoo, I digress. In my Time with the Gurkhas I found out that there are 4 different types of Gurkha units. 1st and most well know are the Gurkhas of the British Army. 2nd being the Indian Army Regiment. 3rd being the Nepalese Army Gurkha unit.

(I was told there are even many Nepalies now serving in the French Foreign legion and that there is a Gurkha unit there now, Though I cannot confirm this so far.)

And last but not least the Gurkhas of the Burmese Army - not a lot is know about these cats - Believe it or not there is a group of Napalie speaking people living in Myanmar (Burma). And true to tradition the Gurkhas serving there they are no slackers in the courage department. I would like to bring your attention to one such man in Burma.

I cant find a picture of him but he served with the No. 4 Battalion of the Burmese frontier force, He earned that countries highest award for gallantry in the battle of the Tachileik highway, not far from Mae Sai , Thailand where I reside most of the time.
I present to you Private Aung San Thuriya Suk Bahdur Rai (Nepali: सुक बहादुर राई, Burmese: ဆာ့ခ်ဗဟာဒူးရွိုင်း) (serial No.(kyee) 01914)

Who has been the only Gurkha (ဂေါ်ရခါး in Burmese) to have received Aung San Thuriya medal, the highest and most prestigious award in Myanmar (Burma) for gallantry and bravery in the face of enemy.

He was killed in action while fighting against invading Kuomintang (KMT) troops of General Li Mi of China in the Battle of Tachileik Highway in Shan State, Myanmar in 1950.Throughout the action, he displayed conspicuous gallantry and responsible for killing several enemy combatants.
Suk Bahdur Rai was honoured and awarded Aung San Thuriya medal posthumously by President Mahn Win Maung.
Ayo Gurkali!
