He didnt want it after it broke so I will make a new handle for it from oak or a jungle hard wood and add it to my gear pile.

He didn't want it after the handle broke?! Did you ask him if he'd actually listened to a word you'd said, during the survival course? It must feel like you're p#ssing in the wind, sometimes. But, hey, at least you got a good shovel out of it - his loss, your gain. :)
