Tomahawks latest camp out in the Huachucas

I had an interesting camp out that might even rival my friend and 1st ever Tomahawks Scout  Jeff Rameys camp when he got snowed out and was "Rescued" by "Homie" Matthew Nunn.

I had 2 beautiful warm sunny days, then around dusk on the 2nd evening I saw the weather change. Clouds rolled in, and the temperature dropped a bit. So, as a precaution against rain or snow, I re rigged my shelter lower to the ground. The wind picked up and it got colder so I crawled into my Tingguian tribe hammock, and sleeping bag to do a bit of reading.

All was well until about "zero dark 30" when a wind gust rivaling a micro burst roared down the canyon and blew out my shelter and knocked me out of my hammock. In addition, it swept all of the gear I had under my hammock out into the dark woods.

So, there I was in my boxers and t shirt, bare foot, in the rain. My tarp was flapping like crazy in the wind. I looked around and found my shoes snagged on a bush. I pulled them on then re-rigged my tarp, stuffed my wet sleeping bag back in my hammock and went to look for my pack.

I happened to see a darker shape among the dark shapes in the dark woods. luckilly, It was my bag, I open it and pulled on all of the clothing I had with me ,then crawled back into my semi wet bag and rode out the rest of the dark night. The wind howled, changed direction, the temps dropped then it began to snow, the wind drove the snow through my shelter and piled it into my hammock.

It was pretty cold. As soon as it was light, I cut my hammock down(the ropes were frozen). stuffed all my shit into my pack and beat feet down the trail for town. Its about 7 miles as the crow flies from my "redoubt" in the mountains to my friends house. I made it in a little over 2 hours. Not a bad tme for a fat old man with a 200 pound liver.

This experience was an eye opener for me, a "re-awakening" if you will about Mother nature. It just goes to show you that no matter how prepared or skilled you are, Mother nature can ream you a new asshole any time she wants. All in all,it was a good time. I look forward to other adventures in preferably warmer climates.
